Designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body.

Originally called Contrology, Pilates is a method of exercise designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the body. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, this system of physical movement encourages the use of the mind to control the muscles. Focusing on healthy breathing and alignment of the spine, the exercises strengthen the core postural muscles and improve bone density. Other benefits of practicing pilates include: improving postural problems, streamlining the body without building bulk or stressing the joints, increasing body awareness, improving athletic performance and helping prevent injuries.

Unlike traditional forms of exercise, pilates exercises are performed in fewer repetitions with emphasis on precise movements requiring control and proper form. This method of total body conditioning can be performed in two forms: mat and equipment pilates. The mat work involves a series of calisthenic motions performed using body weight and gravity to build strength and flexibility. The equipment exercises involve the use of unique spring-based apparatus which provides resistance to either assist or further challenge the movements.

Pilates has been used to train dancers and many professional athletes in flexibility and physical strength. Today, it is used for rehabilitation purposes or as a fitness regime for a lifetime
